Community Outreach

The urgent care and after hours medical needs in the area have created a groundswell of community support for the overall project. With this in mind we hope to have the Makana North Shore Urgent Care provide a number of community outreach services in addition to clinical emergency medical care. The involved physicians are all faculty members of the University of Utah School of medicine and instructors for the university residency in emergency medicine, surgery and the critical care fellowship program. They encompass a wide breadth of expertise in disaster management, paramedical and aeromedical services, critical care, resuscitation and clinical medical education. We plan to leverage this varied expertise in multiple community outreach opportunities.

career development outreach

The Makana physicians plan to work with North Shore schools in an effort to promote awareness and interest in healthcare careers. We plan to give presentations in the schools where we will invite interested students to shadow physicians, mid-level practitioners and nurses in the Makana North Shore Urgent Care Clinic. We hope to start a student interest group in healthcare careers and raise funds for scholarship support of these future doctors and nurses.

Disaster assistance

The North Shore of Kauai is at regular risk for severe weather in the form of hurricanes, flooding and even Tsunamis. We plan on volunteering our physician expertise in disaster management to the existing team of dedicated people who are already planning for major north shore emergencies. In addition, we hope to create a well-stocked disaster staging area near the Makana North Shore Urgent Care where our staff can actively participate in serving the community in the event of a disaster situation.
